Lapis lazuli, also known simply as lapis, is a blue metamorphic rock that has been used as a gemstone, sculpting material, pigment, and ornamental material for thousands of years. Evidence reveals it was mined in the area of Afghanistan as early as the 7th millenium B.C. Lapis was used to ornament the funeral mask of King Tutankhamun. It was one of the finest and most expensive blue pigments used by artists of the Baroque and Renaissance periods, including Michaelangelo’s use of it to paint the blue sky in the Sistine Chapel.
