Genuine hematite is an iron oxide mineral found in rocks throughout the world. Known for its mirror bright luster and its dark gray color, its high density produces a “hefty” sensation when handled. Hematite is usually a deep silvery gray but can also be found naturally in variations of red and brown. It is commonly found in places that have mineral hot springs but can also form in areas where there has been volcanic activity. Properties such as protection, grounding, focus, and confidence have been attributed to it.
Magnetic hematite is a man-made version of hematite that uses a high concentration of magnetic material to create its effect. It contains little or no genuine hematite.
Rainbow hematite or Iridescent hematite is a man-made material with a coating added to create its colorful luster.
Hematine, Hemalyke and Hemalike are man-made materials containing little or no genuine hematite.
